Good's Woods

The story of Good's Woods is about one family's connection to the land and the legacy they are leaving. Late in the Preserve the Wonder campaign, the 50 acres of woodlands near the Duncan Creek campaign property were donated by a member of the Good family, owners of the Duncan Creek land. The daughter of original owners Vern and Virginia Good viewed the Duncan Creek campaign video after an initial discussion with Friends about selling this additional 50-acre tract. Inspired by the campaign, she contacted Friends a few weeks later and said she wanted to donate her land to Friends' land trust in honor of her parents. Her sole requests were that the land never be logged and we name it Good's Woods.

But many people have a connection to this land. The family of one of Friends' board members, Mia Prickett, has a connection to the land around Good's Woods. As she describes in the video (click on the "play" icon on the image to view), Mia is the great-great-granddaughter of Chief Tulmuth, the leader of the Watlala band of Cascade Indians. The chief's daughter was Indian Mary who demonstrated a tremendous tenacity to stay on her homeland despite efforts to forcibly remove her. In fact, the creek just to the west of Duncan Creek is named Indian Mary Creek.
